Treatment & Education for Diabetes in Visalia

At Kaweah Health we offer a number of services for people with diabetes including free support groups, free classes and one-on-one services available at our Diabetes Education Clinic. At the Diabetes Education Clinic, patients can receive counseling and treatment for diabetes, medical nutrition, weight loss, and other specialty care services. Whether you have been recently diagnosed or have had your condition for many years, we offer numerous educational programs to help you make changes for a healthier lifestyle. Patients can be seen one-on-one with an educator or in group classes depending on their insurance and patient preference. We encourage family members to attend also.

Your health care provider must send us a referral, we accept most insurances. When your referral is received from your health care provider, our staff checks your insurance benefits as a courtesy before we call to schedule the appointment.

8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Educational Courses
What to Expect

Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (CDCES) provide the education in our Diabetes Education Clinic. A CDCES is a person that is a Registered Dietitian or Registered Nurse that has special training to help people with Diabetes learn how to take better care of their condition. Our education can be provided in any language – We use a certified translator (including sign language) if we do not speak the same language as our patient. We design the patient visit around what the patient wants to learn to make sure they get the most out of each session they attend.

Education topics include:
  • Diet and carbohydrate counting
  • Use of medications (pills and insulin)
  • How to inject insulin or other Diabetes medication
  • How to adjust insulin doses with doctor’s approval
  • Preventing and treating low and high blood sugars
  • Preventing complications to eyes, feet, heart, kidneys
  • Emotional well-being in Diabetes
  • Pregnancy and Diabetes
  • Feet care/skin care/dental care
  • Sick day rules
  • Labs and recommended exams
  • How to use a glucose meter
  • How to get/use a Continuous Glucose Monitor like Libre2 or Dexcom
  • How to get/use an insulin pump in place of injection insulin
Medical Nutrition Therapy

A Registered Dietitian is available to work with people on nutrition related needs such as obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver disease, and more. A referral is required by the patient's health care provider and appointments can be made Monday - Friday, between 8 AM to 4 PM. Call 559-624-2847 to get more information.
