Registration open for free six-week chronic disease workshop
First workshop set to begin January 30 in Porterville
VISALIA – Registration is open for a series of free six-week workshops
that will help people with chronic conditions learn how to better manage
their health.
The Empowerment for Better Living Chronic Disease Self-Management Program
workshops, presented by Kaweah Delta Health Care District in partnership
with Community Services Employment Training (CSET), are facilitated by
leaders who themselves have a chronic condition. They are designed to
help people with ongoing health problems such as diabetes, arthritis,
heart disease, asthma, or other chronic conditions. Class size is typically
around 8-10 participants with each session lasting 2.5 hours.
Topics that are covered include: dealing with difficult emotions, managing
symptoms, goal setting, problem solving, nutrition, understanding medications,
making informed treatment decisions, and increasing strength and stamina
through better fitness.
The workshops will be offered on a quarterly basis at Kaweah Delta’s
Chronic Disease Management Center, 325 S. Willis St., Visalia. The dates
for the English workshops for 2018 are:
- February 7-March 14, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (every Wednesday for six weeks)
- May 2-June 6, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (every Wednesday for six weeks)
- July 18-August 22, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (every Wednesday for six weeks)
- October 3-November 7, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (every Wednesday for six weeks)

The following workshops will take place as part of a partnership with CSET
Senior Services as follows:
- January 30-March 6, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (every Tuesday for six weeks),
at Porterville Senior Center, 280 N. Fourth St., Porterville
- May 1-June 5, from 9-11:30 a.m. (every Tuesday for six weeks), Woodlake
Senior Center, 179 N. Magnolia, Woodlake

The workshop will be held in Spanish, Tomando Control de su Salud, at the
following locations:
- February 8-March 15, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (every Thursday for six weeks),
Farmersville Senior Center, 623 N. Avery, Farmersville.
- March 2-April 6, from 9-11:30 a.m. (every Friday for six weeks), Cutler
Senior Center, Ledbetter Park, 12691 Avenue 408, Cutler.
- March 13 – April 17, from 9-11:30 a.m. (every Tuesday for six weeks),
Earlimart Senior Center, 712 E. Washington, Earlimart.
- April 10-May 15 (every Tuesday for six weeks) 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Lindsay
Family Resource Center, 400 E. Hermosa, Lindsay
Goshen and Exeter Senior Centers will also be scheduling sessions in the
near future.
This workshop was developed by Dr. Kate Lorig at Stanford University and
is now under the Self-Management Resource Center. Participants demonstrate
significant improvements in the areas covered. They also report fewer
hospitalizations and outpatient visits.
