GME Psychiatry Residency FAQ The following is a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs). Is KDHCD Affiliated With A Medical School? Yes. KDHCD has been formally affiliated with the University of California at Irvine School of Medicine (UCI) since 2011. Residents have online accessto UCI’s extensive Graduate Medical Education resources and will be able to participate in various lectures through video technology. What Is The Housing Situation In Visalia? Visalia is an attractive location for singles and families to live thanks to the affordability of housing, a consistently stable and growing economy, good weather, and low crime. KDHCD is located deep in the heart of California in a family-friendly, safe community of 125,000 people with an exceptionally low cost of living. What Are The Other KDHCD Graduate Medical Education Programs? KDHCD currently has ACGME accredited residency programs in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Transitional Year, Surgery, and Psychiatry. All PGY-1 Psychiatry Residents complete three months in Family Medicine and one month in Emergency Medicine. However, any resident on a given service will be afforded the same treatment, responsibilities and privileges as any other resident at the same level and experiences, regardless of specific residency. We encourage close working synergies between residents of all programs. It is the commitment of the Office of Graduate Medical Education to avoid conflicts between services and to maximize educational experiences for all of our residents by seamless integration of our programs where they intersect. Does Kaweah Delta Have Child Care Available? Yes. Kaweah Kids Child Care Center is immediately next door to the main hospital campus and licensed under Title 22 of the State of California’s Community Care Licensing agency. Teachers are all CPR and First Aid certified. Kaweah Kids Center is open to all employees of KDHCD and is dedicated to serving children ages 0 - 5 years old. Rates available upon request. What Are Other Special Features Of Training At KDHCD? KDHCD has a beautiful new GME floor and resident lounge with kitchen, large conference rooms for didactic lectures, video-conferencing and panoramic views of the nearby Sierra Nevada mountain range. Residents have private sleep rooms for on-call duties, access to a medical library, an annual educational stipend, free parking at all clinical sites, a staff cafeteria, an annual Resident retreat and a free iPad computer. New PGY-1 residents have an extensive two-week Orientation before starting full-time clinical duties. Do You Allow Observership Positions? No. Will Your Program Sponsor My Visa? Our program will consider J-1 VISAs sponsored through the ECFMG. We do not sponsor VISAs at this time. Is a PTAL Required? Yes. International Medical School graduates must obtain and submit a current PTAL (California Letter). The PTAL must have been issued (or renewed) within the last 12 months to be considered. Will Your Program Consider My Application If I have Completed A Portion Of Or Graduated From Another US Residency Program? No. We are unable to consider your application if you have previously started or completed an ACGME or AOA program. (Due to CMS policies regarding newly accredited teaching institutions)
