VISALIA – Kaweah Delta Community Outreach will start an ongoing series of free diabetes education classes on Tuesday, April 1, in Visalia.  

The free six-week diabetes education class will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays at Health Net, 2121 N. Dinuba Boulevard in Visalia. Classes will be taught by Candy Silva, a community health worker and member of the Kaweah Delta Community Outreach Department. Class schedule is as follows:    

April 1: Session 1 - Understanding Diabetes
April 8: Session 2 - Nutrition for People With Diabetes
April 15: Session 3 - Nutrition Continued
April 22: Session 4 - Medications and Physical Activity
April 29: Session 5 - Staying Well with Diabetes
May 6: Session 6 - Stress, Depression and Diabetes  

Tulare County continues to exceed state averages for rates of diabetes, according to the Tulare County Health and Human Services Agency. Adults diagnosed with diabetes - one of several diseases linked to obesity - has climbed since 2003, reaching 11.3 percent in 2007, compared to 7.8 percent statewide in 2007.
