Department Name: 2 South [M/S Clinical Decision Unit (CDU)]
M/S Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) 2 South is a fast paced hybrid unit of
both observation patients and medical-surgical inpatients. We work as
an extension of the Emergency Room to further investigate issues that
brought the patient in to be seen. It is a fast paced unit that requires
a strong assessment background to quickly determine the next step in the
patient’s care. The types of patients range from chest pain to complex
wound care, with over 50% being worked up for a cardiac issue.
Staff on this unit will work with multiple ancillary departments and will
have a variety of patients which provides a vast opportunity to learn
This is a 29 bed unit with average patient ratio of 1:4, 1:5. The average
daily census is 27. Length of patients stay is an average of 39 hours.
The department utilizes self-scheduling allowing employees to work with
each other to cover shifts so there is a good work/life balance. Staff
work 12 hr. shifts rotating weekends and normally work 2 major and 2 minor
holidays per year.
Teamwork on the unit is most rewarding. Knowing that each team member works
together and is always available to provide advice or assistance helps
keep spirits up in a fast paced environment. The team participates in
many “outside” activities together from celebrations to volunteering
in the community.
