After a heart attack, or a newly diagnosed heart condition, your perspective on life may change drastically. It can be hard to get back out into the "real" world and live again. Your body doesn't feel the same, and you may have emotional and physiological changes that accompany your new outlook.
Cardiac rehabilitation is designed to help you get back to the life you want to live. With a personalized program to fit your specific needs, cardiac rehabilitation combines exercise with education to help you develop healthy living habits beneficial to your entire body. In addition, a highly specialized clinical team works closely with your physician to ensure you are getting the right therapy for your condition.
Not all Cardiac Rehabilitation is created equal
Cardiac Rehabilitation is not just another form of physical therapy. Cardiac rehabilitation requires a comprehensive program that includes a medical evaluation, a program to modify cardiac risk factors such as nutritional counseling, prescribed exercise, education and counseling. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Kaweah Delta Health Care District is the ONLY such program in Tulare and Kings Counties. In order to provide such a comprehensive service, a team of highly trained and certified specialists is required.
Your team of specialists at Kaweah Delta Cardiac Rehab include:
- Registered nurses trained in advance life support
- Exercise physiologists
- Social Workers
- I'm not sure I should go to Cardiac Rehabilitation
You may wonder if you are too weak or maybe too sick to participate in cardiac rehabilitation. However, the Cardiac Rehab program is designed for people of all health levels. Our focus is on improving your quality of life by focusing on ways to improve your current condition as well as effectively decrease the effects of your heart condition for the future.
Patients that have suffered from the following conditions are prime candidates for cardiac rehabilitation:
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Coronary artery bypass surgery
- Heart v repair/replacement
- Stable angina pectoris
- PTCA/coronary scenting
- Heart transplant
- Congestive heart failure
To get to know you and understand your specific condition, one of our cardiac rehab specialists will do a full evaluation with you on your first appointment. From the information you provide at your evaluation, combined with your doctors notes and a few non-invasive tests done at the same appointment, a plan will be set up for your individualized rehab program.
An average program calls for three one-hour appointments a week for 12 weeks but can vary by a patient's needs and schedule. By the end of the program, you will feel better, both physically and emotionally.
Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover the cost of a program like cardiac rehabilitation. Give us a call with the plan you have and we can assist you with what is covered in your plan.
You can be referred to Cardiac Rehabilitation by your cardiologist or primary care physician. Your physician just needs to sign a prescription slip and you can give us a call to begin your road to full recovery!
