NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)

Promoting Healthy Families

Overview
Kaweah Delta Medical Center’s NICU is a 15 bed unit where babies are cared for who have been born prematurely, have birth defects, infections or other illnesses. We have the ability to care babies born as early as 26 weeks gestation. We are able to provide routine and high frequency ventilatory care (HFOV).

High Risk Deliveries
Neonatologists & pediatric hospitalists along with NICU registered nurses and respiratory therapists attend all high-risk deliveries and cesarean sections. Our physicians also provide pre-delivery consultations at mom’s bedside as needed.

Neonatal Care Team
A team of specialists staff our unit: board certified neonatologists, pediatric hospitalists, NICU registered nurses, respiratory therapists, discharge care coordinators, a clinical nurse specialist, physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologist, pharmacists, social workers, case managers and a developmental care nurse. We value this team approach that ensures each patient & family receives comprehensive care.

Family Centered Care
Our unit focuses on the developmental care of our patients and families. We encourage parent participation with care whenever appropriate. Parents are encouraged to visit as much as possible with sibling visits every weekend. When rooms are available, we offer “rooming in” prior to discharge so that parents can get comfortable caring for their baby.

Parent and Family Education

A variety of classes are available including sibling, new dad, breastfeeding and infant CPR classes.
