EP Cardiology Lab Opens

Posted Date: 10/13/2008

In an effort to continually provide state-of-the-art care for its patients, Kaweah Delta Health Care District announces the opening of its new electrophysiology lab at Kaweah Delta Medical Center.

Now, cardiology patients who require the services of electrophysiologist Dr. Sukhvinder Bhajal have a room dedicated to procedures focusing on the electricity of the heart.
Dr. Bhajal, the only cardiac electrophysiologist in the southern San Joaquin Valley, comes to Kaweah Delta Medical Center following a prestigious two-year fellowship at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. He has been working in Visalia since July 2007. Expanding the cardiac catheterization lab at the hospital from four to five rooms means Dr. Bhajal's patients have access to state-of-the art equipment at any time.

"For me to do procedures, a lot of equipment is required," Dr. Bhajal said. "Before, we were moving equipment in and out and we were less efficient. Now that the equipment is fixed, we will be more efficient and we have more time to serve the community better."

Dr. Bhajal estimates he can perform three to four procedures a day, from a catheter ablation to working with patients who have pacemakers and defibrillators. As an "electrician of the heart," Dr. Bhajal works to correct hearts that beat too slow or too fast.

Nurse manager Robert Geide, who works in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, echoed Dr. Bhajal's sentiments.
"As one of only a few electrophysiology labs in the Valley, it will allow us to take care of a patient more efficiently," he said. "It makes our whole department more efficient."

Geide added that the nursing staff works with state-of-the-art radiology and electrophysiology equipment, and that they have been training on the equipment for the past several months. That coupled with Dr. Bhajal's expertise adds up to better care for patients, he said.
