Chest compressions can be the difference between life and death, and that's the message that emergency medical technician Mark Walker preaches when teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation these days.
"People are so reluctant to get involved because of the mouth-to-mouth," explained Walker, who works for American Ambulance Visalia.
He was the instructor for a free, non-certificated CPR class recently offered by Kaweah Delta for Heart Health Month. Both a juvenile (age 8 and older) and adult class were offered, and will be offered again Thursday.
Compressions are easier for young people to understand and are a way for those who don't want to do mouth-to-mouth to still help.
"Even if they do nothing else but compressions, it helps because it keeps the blood circulating through the heart and through the brain," Walker said.
