Earlier this week the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) authorized the occupancy and use of the Kaweah Delta Medical Center Acequia Wing Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) and the Telemetry Unit.
The new CVIC unit has 20 beds exclusively dedicated to the treatment of critical cardiac patients. Each room is equipped with all new beds, computers and monitoring systems. The beds are as high tech as the computer systems. Each bed is specially designed for the critical care patient to prevent the development of complications. Computer documentation is available in each room, meeting the national standard for Electronic Medical Record keeping. Not only does each room have sophisticated wireless network systems they are also equipped to handle dialysis patient care.
The Medical telemetry unit is a 24 bed unit that is exclusive for the care of open-heart in/out patients and non-critical cardiac patients. Telemetry, a remote system of monitoring a patient’s heart rhythm, is a necessary part of monitoring cardiac recuperation. Keeping a close eye on monitoring the patient is key to a patient’s speedy recovery. The new CVICU and the telemetry units have monitoring systems that utilizes a wireless network throughout the Acequia Tower and the entire Medical Center and it monitors the patient throughout their hospital stay no matter where they are in the facility. Physicians can monitor their patients from their office or home with this sophisticated system and monitor their patient in real time just as if they are at the bedside.
“Having cardiac patient’s clustered in a centralized location in the hospital allows for a higher level of care, as nursing staff are focused on just caring for cardiac and vascular patients they become more familiar with the nuances that can occur. This work and training allows for better patient outcomes”, states Dan Allain, Director of Critical Care. The unit will open to patients August 3, 2009.
