Kaweah Delta Granted Anesthesiology Residency Program
Kaweah Delta’s new residency program will be the only anesthesiology program offered in the Central Valley.
VISALIA, CA. - Following a site visit earlier this year, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved Kaweah Delta Health Care District initial accreditation to offer a four-year anesthesiology residency program. Kaweah Delta’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) program will extend the opportunity to medical school graduates and will be accepting four residents per year. Beginning this June, the program will be the only anesthesiology residency program in the Central Valley and one of very few anesthesiology residency programs between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
“The Kaweah Delta faculty is excited about our new anesthesiology residency training program," said Michael Pesce M.D., anesthesiology program director for Kaweah Delta Graduate Medical Education. "This addition to our teaching mission will benefit our current patients, as well as future generations of Central Valley residents, who can look forward to advanced anesthesia care available locally."
Dr. Pesce said the department looks forward to interviewing physicians from across the country and recruiting the four who will be best fit to for training in Visalia. Furthermore, he believes prospects will be first rate and highly attracted to Kaweah Delta’s training program, which include exceptional facilities, equipment, teaching, and experience.
“We receive thousands of applications every year for our current residency programs,” said Lori Winston, M.D., Designated Institutional Official for Kaweah Delta Graduate Medical Education. “Of those, we interview hundreds of medical student candidates. After reviewing their files, board scores, and prior experience, we will make a final decision about who will join us to serve the local community.”
Kaweah Delta Health Care District offers post-graduate medical students a state-of-the-art regional medical center, eight campuses, 581 patient beds, more than 300 physicians, and an anesthesia staff of more than 25 individuals. The medical center now contains a newly remodeled and expanded surgical suite with 18 operating rooms where medical staff administers nearly 18,000 anesthetics per year, plus an obstetrical suite with nearly 5,000 deliveries.
“At full complement, our community will have 16 anesthesiology residents, for a total of 121 residents training within [Kaweah Delta’s] six residents programs,” Dr. Winston said. “Our community will benefit from more physicians practicing family medicine, emergency medicine, psychiatry, general surgery, anesthesiology, as well as residents conducting their one-year post-graduate transitional year program.”
Kaweah Delta’s anesthesiology program will consist of a four-year education, which includes one year of non-anesthesia clinical training (Clinical Base Year) and three years of clinical anesthesia training. During the first year, physicians experience both surgical and internal medicine rotations. In the subsequent three years, residents will spend time in anesthesia rotation including anesthesia subspecialties such as critical care, cardiothoracic, pediatrics, obstetrics, neuroanesthesia, and pain medicine.
“There are numerous benefits to our six graduate medical education programs,” Dr. Winston said. “Studies show that teaching hospitals provide a higher level of care. Visalia will have more physicians providing more patient care.” Dr. Winston also shared how equally critical efforts are to address the physician shortage in our area. “It is estimated that approximately fifty percent of physicians settle within 30 miles from where they train. This is one answer to fill the absence left by retiring physicians.”
Kaweah Delta is now accepting applications from medical school graduates wishing to begin the anesthesiology residency program on June 19, 2017.
Kaweah Delta Medical Center is the only trauma center between Fresno and Bakersfield and was recently awarded four out of five stars in overall hospital quality from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and an A in hospital safety in Leapfrog’s Fall 2016 Hospital Safety Score.
